Rabbi Benjy Morgan
Born in New York City, and raised in the UK, Rabbi Benjy Morgan spent 14 years studying in the top Rabbinic Training Academies in the world. He received Semicha from both the Rabbinical Supreme Court in Israel and the Jerusalem Kollel in 2010.
He is an award-winning public speaker and lecturer, and an avid singer and guitar player. Rabbi Morgan leads many annual trips abroad, weekly lectures, events and Friday night dinners that are held for hundreds of Young Professionals in the JLE Centre and in many venues around the world.
As CEO, Rabbi Benjy Morgan is responsible for the innovation and strategy of the JLE in the 21st century. He oversees education across the five different departments in which the JLE operates. He guides 35 dedicated staff and dozens of weekly programs that service over 1000 individuals each week. In 2023 we welcomed back Rabbi Morgan as he has taken on a new senior role for the JLE including taking the JLE and its flagship building to the next level.
Rabbi Aubrey Hersh
Rabbi Aubrey Hersh was born and raised in London. He went on to study at Yeshiva in Gateshead and then Jerusalem for 8 years, returning to the UK in 1991 to work in media & advertising. Since 1996 he has been involved in education, principally at the JLE where he has taught Philosophy, History & Halacha. He was the co-editor of the 60 Days-for-60 Years series on the Holocaust (2006) & Israel (2008), and has written and lectured extensively both in the UK and abroad.
Over the last 20 years, he has run more than 250 heritage tours in Europe to destinations such as Krakow & Auschwitz, Prague, Paris, Amsterdam and Budapest, and since 2003 has specialised in Holocaust education, working with the Imperial War Museum and Yad Vashem, as well as Sir Martin Gilbert and Father Patrick Desbois.
Rabbi Dov Cowan
Rabbi Dr Akiva Tatz
Rabbi Doctor Akiva Tatz, Senior Lecturer at the JLE was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. After practising as a doctor in both South Africa and the U.S., he moved to Israel where he practised both in hospital and general medicine in Jerusalem and engaged in a number of years of Talmudic study and later teaching in Jewish thought and medical ethics in Jerusalem.
He is the Founder and Director of the Jerusalem Medical Ethics Forum and has written a number of books on the subject of Jewish Thought and Philosophy including Living Inspired and World Mask. His work has been translated into Spanish, French and Portuguese.
Rabbi Natanel Cohen-Arazi
Rabbi Nati was born in Mexico and raised in Amsterdam & Hong Kong. A graduate of the Radin and Mir yeshivas he worked in commercial real estate before making the move to Kiruv. Rabbi Nati, who speaks a number of languages, has extensive experience working with youth at risk in various frameworks including an ultra-Orthodox emergency centre and a Director of Kidum Noar of Jerusalem. He loves working out, boxing and a good scotch.
Mr Joel Elias
Joel grew up in Redbridge and was heavily involved with Jewish youth movements, youth clubs and the local Jewish community centre. After taking a Gap year in Israel touring and studying leadership skills Joel returned to undertake a degree in Informal and Community Education at Canterbury University. Joel has since returned to Israel spending time in Yeshiva Aish HaTorah and taking Israel tour for Jewish Youth Movements.
Joel has worked in the Jewish voluntary sector for 16 years including roles at Norwood, Aish and most recently Jewish Care holding the role of Community Centre Manager and Recreational Project Manager. As a previous director of the Karten Technology Network, Joel developed a keen interest in the use of cutting-edge technology benefiting those living with disabilities and dementia. Utilising his project management qualifications and management training Joel enjoys problem-solving, team building and focusing on efficiencies and best practices. Joel manages the operations and overall running of the JLE working closely with the CEO and directorate.
Outside of work Joel enjoys DIY having recently renovated his house himself, cooking and baking and has a soft spot for South Africa.
Sacha Johnstone
Born and raised in Redbridge, Sacha was elected head boy at King Solomon High School, before going on to gain a first-class honours degree in philosophy from the University of Birmingham. Passionate about inspiring the next generation of young Jews, Sacha has held various senior voluntary positions within the Jewish Lads’ & Girls’ Brigade and led the team that organised their 125th-anniversaryth anniversary summer camp. He has also led an Israel tour and multiple Birthright trips, and to date has led over 200 young Jews on immersive educational trips to Israel.
Sacha is also a professional magician, with over a decade of experience entertaining audiences all over the UK and further afield, and has even performed for the likes of Angelina Jolie, Tom Hardy and Daniel Craig. Sacha also has a wealth of experience in the world of ‘retailtainment’ and has run sales training seminars for some of the world’s leading retailers, as well as having appeared on TV shopping channels in the UK and abroad.
A keen outdoor enthusiast, Sacha has completed the UK 3 Peaks challenge (twice), has trekked to Everest base camp, and has submitted Mt. Kilimanjaro, all whilst raising tens of thousands of pounds for various charities.
Michael Cohen
Michael qualified as an ACCA in public practice in 1986 and has spent the last 30 years in various commercial roles. He worked in the Virgin Group of Companies for a number of years and was European CFO for a Hi-Tec US Engineering Company listed on the NASDAQ. Michael is a keen footballer, musician and reader and likes to keep abreast of current affairs.
Mrs Nancy Ziskind
Nancy lived in Eretz Yisrael for 21 years before marrying R’ Ziskind and moving to London. She taught in Bais Yaakov LeMorot (Yeshan) for many years-music and English and now teaches music in YesodeyHaTorah Senior Girls school in Stamford Hill and Torah subjects at the JLE.
Rabbi Yitzchok Ziskind
Yitzchok Ziskind was formerly a professional architect and town planner. He was a pioneer of outreach in South Africa for 40 years before being invited to join the staff in Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem. After teaching there for three years Reb Yitzchok joined the JLE team in London in 2001 and now divides his time between teaching here at the JLE and teaching in Ohr Somayach, Jerusalem. Reb Yitzchok also counsels couples before marriage and the Ziskind home is open and well known for its Shabbat hospitality.
Rabbi Dr. Ivan Lerner
Dr Lerner, a former principal and educational superintendent, is the Rabbi Emeritus of the 600-family Claremont Hebrew Congregation in Cape Town. He is a past Chairman of the South African Rabbinical Association. Dr Lerner’s background includes specialities in Rabbinic, psychology and education. He was a successful principal of the Hebrew Academy of Orange County and Valley Torah High School both in Southern California.
He has written numerous articles on family issues, parenting, communication and conflict resolution. Dr Lerner became a household name in Australia through his radio appearances and advice columns which were nationally syndicated through the Australian Jewish News. His inspirational television appearances in South Africa drew large and loyal audiences.
Currently, Rabbi Lerner is the Human Resource Director for MEOR, an outreach organization on top-tier university campuses in the USA, and an Industrial psychologist consulting with businesses and non-profits. In addition to his frequent trips to London for JLE, he writes a regular column in ‘What Where When’ magazine, a monthly Jewish periodical in the Baltimore, Maryland area with a readership of over 40,000.
As a licensed psychologist, Dr Lerner is often called upon to discuss themes which require a blending of his spiritual, educational and psychological background.
Rabbi Dr Lerner is married to Arleeta, an educator and former Girls High School school principal. They are the proud parents of 5 married adult children and are blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
